This post will explain our findings when using and testing the Lumie Bodyclock Starter 30 alarm clock, with sunrise and sunset features which is a Certified Medical Device (class 1) designed and manufactured by Lumie, the inventors of the Bodyclock integrated dawn simulator.
Over the course of the past few months, we've been testing out the Lumie Bodyclock Starter 30 alarm clock. Having thought a lot about the different aspects in getting in to a better sleep routine, this felt like a good place to start when it comes to products that can assist in that department.
Having received the Lumie Bodyclock and upon opening the box, it really is a nice simple piece of kit. The box contains the light/alarm itself, the light bulb and a small instruction manual with all the info you need to get the bodyclock up and running.
After having a quick read through the instructions, inserting the bulb and plugging in the bodyclock, it was time to have a play with the settings. Much to our surprise, it was very simple to set and operate. Having seen other reviews on this exact same product, both on Youtube and on various blogging websites which claimed that the Starter 30 was confusing.
So then we were set to begin the testing.
As approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute, Lumie Bodyclock Starter is an alarm clock that wakes you naturally with a gradually brightening 30-minute sunrise. The light is a signal for your body to ease off production of sleep hormones (e.g. melatonin) and increase levels of those that help you get up and go (e.g. cortisol). There's an optional alarm beep - just in case you're not convinced - but most people turn this off after a few days, preferring to wake up to the light on its own.
Using a dawn simulator can help keep your sleep/wake cycle on track and has been shown to boost mood, energy and productivity levels for the whole day. If you're not a 'morning person' Lumie Bodyclock Starter is simply a much nicer way to wake up. It's also an effective winter blues option and a useful complement to a lightbox in treating more severe SAD.
After a good 3 months testing the Lumie Bodyclock, the real takeaway from the whole experience was that the sunset feature was a favourite and most utilised function of the light.
Getting in to bed and having a lovely clear light which dimmed down over the course of 30 minutes was a really relaxing experience. Slowly unwinding in bed until eventual darkness has a really relaxing effect on the mind (well it did for us anyway).
We chose not to use the alarm sound function, but can confirm that the sound that can be enabled is sufficient to wake you, if of course the light doesn't do the job for you.
We're not 100% sure that the light on it's own is enough to rely on if you really do need to wake at a specific time, but it's a lovely accompaniment to any morning routine.
Having set the morning alarm for 8am, at 7.30am the light on the Lumie Bodyclock slowly begins to brighten. Then at 8am the light reaches its full brightness, lighting up the whole bedroom, which was really pleasant during the cold dark mornings. The light then stays lit for a further 30 minutes preceeding the alarm to allow you and your body to adjust and prepare to face the day.
For the last 3 months we've been using this light's sunset feature and morning sunrise alarm every day and can honestly say that it's made a difference in actually promoting relaxation prior to sleeping and has certainly made a difference upon waking. So much so that I personally purchased one for my Father for Christmas this year.
We're not sure that this has had any direct effect on the mental health of the reviewer, but this along with other self care methods certainly promote a healthier wellbeing.
If you haven't already, then please do watch the video which accompanies this article, it explains in real terms and even demonstrates how the Lumie Bodyclock Starter 30 works and how it effected the reviewers own mental health.
