Interview With Lacey London

Can you tell us a little about yourself, your story so far?

My name is Lacey London and I live in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, with my husband and our Yorkshire Terrier, Oliver.

My first venture as an author was the Clara Andrews series. What started as a fun project soon escalated to a nine book series. The Clara books have been described by my readers as, ‘Bridget Jones meets Shopaholic’ and I think that describes it perfectly.

Do you find the process of writing therapeutic? Or stressful?

I adore the initial stages of writing! The first few weeks where I throw all of my ideas down on paper are my favourite part of the writing process. This is when I am at my most creative and completely lose myself in the plot. Editing, on the other hand, is a completely different story. Editing is the most stressful part of the job. It makes you question what you have worked so hard to achieve.

Would you label yourself as a perfectionist?

I am a self-confessed perfectionist. I can spend months agonising over a manuscript before becoming completely happy with it. One thing I have learned with writing is that there comes a point where you are picking your work apart rather than pulling it together.

Can you tell us the history of your own anxiety and mental health? and what prompted you to write anxiety girl?

I’ve always been a worrisome person, but my real struggle with anxiety and depression started around seven years ago. I’m still not a hundred percent sure what exactly triggered my anxiety, but I quickly found myself falling deeper into an anxiety-fuelled depression. I watched the person I was slowly disappear and all that remained was an empty shell of a woman.

Although my worst days with anxiety are hopefully behind me, I still have the odd wobble and return to the self-help techniques I relied on years ago to help me through. Simple things such as breathing exercises and calming apps can have profound effects on helping to curb the physical effects of anxiety.

I wanted to create a story which showed that mental health issues can happen to anyone, regardless of who you are or what you have. I also wanted to address that there aren’t any rules with anxiety. Mental health issues can affect people for any period of time and in varying degrees of severity. There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution that can be applied to all sufferers.

Tell us a bit about the book, no spoilers.

Set in the glitzy village of Alderley Edge, Anxiety Girl is the story of a beautiful young woman who thought she had it all. Just a girl about town, mental health wasn’t something Sadie Valentine ever really thought about, but when the three evils, anxiety, depression and panic attacks creep into her life, Sadie wonders if she will ever see the light again.

How much of Lacey London is reflected in Sadie Valentine?

I see a lot of myself in Sadie. Relying on my own experience with mental health to write the novel means that a lot of the feelings and emotions Sadie experiences are very real to me. I would like to think that many sufferers with anxiety can relate to what Sadie is going through on one level or another.

How do you expect the book to help others suffering with anxiety?

My aim with Anxiety Girl is to show other sufferers that there is light at the end of the tunnel and remind them they’re not alone.
